June 23, 2015

  • The Al Khafji project in Saudi Arabia has been recognized in the “Environment” category.
  • It is the world’s first large-scale desalination plant to operate with solar power.

June 23, 2015 – Abengoa (MCE: ABG.B/P SM /NASDAQ: ABGB), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, has been recognized by the newspaper La Razón at the 4th edition of its “A Tu Salud” awards that are presented to individuals and companies in the field of health, research, environment, tourism, science and technology.

The Al Khafji project in Saudi Arabia has been recognized in the “Environment” category. The project will create the world’s first large-scale desalination plant powered by solar energy, in Saudi Arabia.

The plant will produce 60,000 m3 of water a day to supply the Al Khafji region in the north west part of the country, ensuring a constant water supply throughout the year.

This globally pioneering project will incorporate a photovoltaic plant that will be capable of supplying the power needed for the desalination process, significantly reducing the operational costs. It will also have a system to optimize power consumption and a pre-treatment phase to reduce the high level of salinity and the oils and fats that are present in the region’s sea water.

The jury for this edition of the awards consisted of Sonia López-Arribas, chairman of the Official Association of Doctors of Madrid; Pedro Rico Perez, general operations manager for private hospitals at IDCsalud/Quirón; Antoni Esteve, chairman of Farmaindustria; Margarita Alfonsel, general secretary of FENIN; Juan Abarca, general manager of HM Hospitales; Carlos Amaya, a neurosurgeon and former general secretary of the State Confederation of Medical Unions (CESM); Federico Plaza, head of government affairs at Roche Farma España; Alfonso Carrascosa, a researcher at the Spanish Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC); Clara Navío, chairman of the Association of Environmental Journalists; and José Ignacio Pastor, professor of the department of materials science at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. The three winners from of the previous edition also sat on the jury.
