The Cerro Dominador solar thermal plant is successfully connected to the Chilean electricity system

April 10, 2021

  • It is the first solar thermal tower plant in Latin America.
  • The plant allows the generation of renewable energy in a flexible, reliable and safe way.

April 10th, 2021 – The Cerro Dominador solar thermal plant, which is being built by Abengoa for its owner EIG Gobal Energy Partners, has successfully completed the last of the main milestones of its execution: the synchronization with the Chilean electricity system of this 110 MW tower plant with 17.5 hours of molten salt storage, and it will be the first of its kind in Latin America.

In the coming months, the plant will deliver energy gradually and in stages to the grid. As reported by Cerro Dominador, after the synchronization, a second phase will be passed, which is the “calibration of the operation, in which a detailed adjustment of the different systems and the final acceptance tests of the plant will be carried out. Finally, we hope to finish the last phase with an operation consistent with the requirements of the National Electric Coordinator”.

Flagship project

The project, which has become one of the most emblematic in the renewable energy sector, both in the country and throughout the continent, is located in the Atacama desert, the area with the highest concentration of solar radiation in the world .

The plant has 10,600 heliostats, each with a surface area of 140 m2, which direct solar radiation to a receiver located 250 meters high. Likewise, it has a pioneering thermal storage system designed and developed by Abengoa, which has 17 and a half hours of storage, which gives this technology a high degree of dispatchability, being able to supply electricity in a stable way 24 hours a day and allowing to respond to all periods of demand for energy consumption.

With all this, it will be able to avoid the emission of about 640,000 tons of CO2 per year and supply a city of approximately 380,000 homes.

Abengoa acts as builder and technological partner of the project, contributing all its know-how in the construction of solar thermal plants, with an experience of more than 30 years. The company has developed and built plants with an installed power of 2.2 GW, which represents 34% of the installed capacity worldwide. His latest projects include his participation in the construction of the world's largest solar complex in Dubai.
