February 11, 2021 – Abengoa (MCE: ABG/P:SM), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the infrastructure, energy and water sectors, received last February 11th a visit from the Tunisian Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries Akissa Bahri at the desalination plant with reverse osmosis technology that it is developing in the south of the city of Sousse (Tunisia). This plant, with a capacity to produce 50,000 m3/d of desalinated water, is Abengoa's first project in the country.
The construction of this plant is part of the urgent 2016-2020 program launched by the Tunisian government for the promotion and development of water resources, whose objective is to strengthen the supply of drinking water, in this case in the Sahel area, as well as supplying the growing demand and avoiding the scarcity of water resources, especially in the summer period.
The contract for the design, construction, commissioning and operation during a period of three months of this desalination plant was awarded in 2017 by the National Water Management and Distribution Company (SONEDE), which depends on the Ministry of Agriculture, to the consortium formed by Abengoa and the Tunisian company Engineering Procurement & Project Management (EPPM).
The Sousse desalination plant will produce drinking water from seawater which will be taken from the cooling water channel of the Sidi Abdelhamid electric power plant at Sousse of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG). In addition, the project has been designed for a possible expansion up to 100,000 m3/d, which would double its original capacity.
Abengoa is a leading company in the international desalination market, recognized for its good performance in its ongoing projects, such as the Shuaibah desalination plant, officially inaugurated in July 2019. This plant, with capacity to produce 250,000 m3/d of desalinated water, entered into commercial operation only 21 months after the start of the works, which represents a milestone in the sector given its characteristics and size. Its leadership in technology and innovation has led it to execute reference projects in the sector such as the largest reverse osmosis desalination plant in the world, located in the Taweelah power and water generation complex, in the United Arab Emirates, with a production capacity of 909,000 m3/d.
