Abengoa, awarded at the International Desalination Association (IDA) Awards

October 24, 2019

  • The company has been awarded in the category of Best Public-Private Partnership, in the framework of the project for the construction of the Agadir desalination plant.
  • The award ceremony took place during the celebration of the international congress that the IDA held from October 20 to 24 in Dubai.

October 24, 2019 - Abengoa (MCE: ABG / P: SM), an international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the infrastructure, energy and water sectors, has been awarded by the International Desalination Association, IDA, with the “Best Public-Private Partnership” award in the context of the desalination project that the company is developing in Agadir, Morocco.

It is a unique project for two clients: ONEE (Office National de l'Electricité et de l'Eau Potable) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development,Water and Forests of Morocco, which was born from the joint of two projects and thanks to which a large desalination plant will be built with a total production capacity of 275,000 m3 of desalinated water per day, which will be the largest plant designed for combined use of drinking water and irrigation.

Abengoa, along with the Moroccan company InfraMaroc as an investment partner, has been responsible for financing the project. Its financial closing took place in April 2018, with the participation of a group of banks led by BMCE (Banque Morocaine du Commerce Extérieur) composed of BCP (Banque Centrale Populaire), CIH (Crédit immobilier et hôtelier) and CDG Capital (Caisse de dépôt et de management). It represented an important reference in the desalination sector given the complexity involved in an infrastructure that meets the needs of two supply contracts and two independent customers.

The contract contemplates the possibility of expanding the capacity up to 400,000 m3/day and the construction of the corresponding irrigation network for an area of 13,600 ha, as well as the option of operation from wind energy. The construction works on this desalination plant began in July 2018 and is currently at a 47% progress rate.

Award for Best Public-Private Partnership

The award, presented by the IDA at its annual international congress, on this occasion held in Dubai from October 20 to 24, has been collected by the CEO of Abengoa, Joaquín Fernández de Piérola, the head of the Water and Energy division of Abengoa, Pedro Almagro and the director of irrigation and agricultural land management, Ahmed El Bouari. The award recognizes those companies that are “an example of collaboration and creativity”.

Abengoa has actively participated in the program of this congress, through the intervention of Pedro Almagro as a panelist in the Leader Summit, and the director of Water and Energy Business Development Jorge Salas, as moderator of a session on renewable energy and desalination.

The recognition is proof of the position of world leadership that Abengoa holds in the desalination sector, with an installed global capacity of more than 1.7 million m3/day that will be extended to 3.7 million when the portfolio in execution is completed. It is currently constructing 2 million m3/d in desalination plants, among which, we can find the largest reverse osmosis desalination plant in the world, of 909,000 m3/d, in the Taweelah power and water generation complex in the United Arab Emirates, as well as the desalination plant for the industrial complex of Emirates Global Aluminiun (EGA), which will produce more than 41,000 m3/day of drinking water and water for industrial use. In Saudi Arabia, the company continues with the works of the Rabigh III desalination plant, of 600,000 m3/day, and in Oman with those corresponding to the Salalah desalination plant, of 114,000 m3/day.
