Abengoa starts construction work on the microcircuit of El Zapotillo aqueduct

August 30, 2016

  • The 40 kilometer long microcircuit, that will supply water to the 1.5 million inhabitants of León, is part of el Zapotillo project, one of Mexico’s most important infrastructures.
  • Abengoa commenced construction work in May.

30 August, 2016 – Abengoa (MCE: ABGB), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, has started work on the 40 kilometer long microcircuit located in León, Guanajuato, which is part of El Zapotillo project. In this way, the company moves forward with the aqueduct construction work that began last May and which will be one of the country’s main projects.

The microcircuit will be capable of supplying water to León’s 1.5 million inhabitants, from el Tanque Venaderos, which is where the aqueduct will end, to different parts of the town. At the same time, on July 31, 2016, Abengoa, together with Conagua, Fonadin, the State Water Commission of Guanajuato and Sapal, signed the amendment to the concession agreement and the contract for the provision of services. The reprogramming of the project execution timelines sets the necessary conditions for its finalization in July 2018.

Following this, it is expected that the areas of work will increase shortly in order to speed up the development of the infrastructure and to complete the project within the agreed timelines.

With a total length of 140 kilometers, el Zapotillo aqueduct will transport potable water from the reservoir, that that has the same name and is located in Jalisco state, to Guanajuato state in the central part of the country. The aqueduct will have the capacity to supply the towns of Altos de Jalisco and León with water.

In addition to the 140 kilometer long aqueduct and the 40 kilometer long microcircuit distributor, with which the company commenced project works, Abengoa will undertake the construction of two pumping plants, a water treatment plant and, the Venaderos regulator tank which will connect the aqueduct to the microcircuit. The concession, which includes undertaking the construction and the operation and maintenance of the aqueduct, will be held for 25 years.

This project will improve the quality of life of approximately two million Mexicans in Altos de Jalisco and León, by means of the treating and transporting of 5.6m3 of water per second. Of this, 3.8 m3 will be channeled to León, and the rest to other towns that run through Altos de Jalisco.

Abengoa has been present in Mexico for 35 years and has extensive experience at an international level in the water sector. The company has constructed desalination plants capable of producing 1.5 million cubic meters of water daily, treatment plants that supply water to more than eight million people, and over 300 project activities in the sector. In addition, it has a vast experience in the developing and construction of projects both with the Mexican government and with the country’s private sector.
