Abengoa inaugurates an advanced technology desalination plant for Masdar in Abu Dhabi

November 23, 2015

  • The project uses ultrafiltration technology, reverse osmosis and membrane distillation.

November 23, 2015. Abengoa (MCE: ABG.B/P SM /NASDAQ: ABGB), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, today inaugurated a desalination pilot plant that uses its most advanced reverse osmosis and membrane distillation technology, in collaboration with the company Masdar, in order to demonstrate and improve these technologies.

Abengoa will be responsible for the engineering and construction work and the subsequent operation and maintenance of the pilot plant in Abu Dhabi. The plant uses an ultrafiltration pre-treatment phase, reverse osmosis and an innovative membrane distillation system designed by Abengoa, which will optimize the advanced reverse osmosis process. This system will also improve the sustainability and environmental aspects of the entire desalination process. The pilot plant is currently reporting excellent results in optimizing the drinking water production process.

During his speech, Carlos Cosín, CEO of Abengoa’s water division said, “we are committed to solving water scarcity problems in the Middle East and for this reason we are mobilizing our efforts in the direction of developing innovative technologies so that the earth´s inhabitants have access to quality water”.

Abengoa has carried out two other desalination projects in the Middle East – a plant in Oman with a capacity of 45,000 m3/day that it has operated and maintained since 2014, and another under construction in Saudi Arabia, which will be the first large-scale solar-powered desalination plant.

This latest project will further consolidate Abengoa’s commitment to R&D and desalination technology to help solve the issue of water scarcity around the world.
