Abengoa is awarded its first transmission project in Oman

December 9, 2014

  • The project, which consists of an electrical substation and transmission line, is worth €20 million

December 9, 2014 - Abengoa (MCE: ABG.B/P SM /NASDAQ: ABGB), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, has been selected by the Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) for a new power transmission project in Oman. The contract, which is worth €20 million and consists of an electrical substation and an associated transmission line, will enable part of the energy consumed in the country’s south west to be supplied in an efficient and sustainable way.

Abengoa, in a consortium with its Omani partner Sarooj, will be responsible for the procurement, construction, testing and commissioning of the Al Dreez 132/33 kV electrical substation and the associated 132 kV transmission line. The new 24 km line will connect the new substation with the existing substation in Ibri.

The development of these infrastructures, located 230 km south west of Muscat, the capital of Oman, are part of OETC’s investment plans to strengthen and expand the country’s electricity network. The works are scheduled to be completed within 18 months. Abengoa estimates that 40 direct jobs and around 150 indirect jobs will be created during the construction period.

This new project will further enhance Abengoa’s experience in power transmission, consolidating its leadership position in this sector around the world. The company has constructed more than 25,000 km of transmission lines and 270 electrical substations in the last 10 years, helping to develop power transport infrastructures.

Abengoa has extensive experience in the Middle East. In Oman it is also constructing a desalination plant that will use reverse osmosis technology, located in Barka, with a capacity to desalinate 45,000 m3 of water per day to meet the demand from more than 225,000 people.
