Abengoa completes the CENIT TecoAgua research project for generating alternative water resources

June 7, 2013

  • The project, which had total funding of €18 million, involved more than 130 researchers.
  • A total of 39 prototypes were developed during the project, resulting in six products entering the pre-commercial phase, more than 20 innovations in water technology and process, and one patent.

June 7, 2013. Abengoa (MCE: ABG.B), the company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, has completed the CENIT TecoAgua research project entitled “Sustainable technologies for the integral water cycle”, which was carried out in collaboration with other research centers and companies. The closing ceremony for the project was attended by Carmen Vela, secretary of state for R&D+i; Andrés Zabara, director of promotion and cooperation at the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI), and numerous representatives from the companies and research centers that participated. The four year project, which had total funding of €18 million, was approved by the Ministry of Science and Innovation in November 2009 as part of the fifth program of Strategic National Consortiums for Technical Research (CENIT-E).

The main objective of Abengoa’s TecoAgua project was to develop sustainable technologies for generating alternative water resources. It involved advanced technologies for recovering polluted natural resources, the regeneration and reuse of waste water, as well as new desalination processes, among others. The research also focused on how to conserve existing resources and optimize water management in terms of energy efficiency, as well as mitigating climate change.

Carmen Vela, secretary state for R&D+i congratulated all of the organizations and companies involved in this CENIT project and reiterated that the results had been extraordinary, pledging to continue to support initiatives of this type. She also emphasized the efforts being made in the field of patents and publications as well as the importance of collaboration between private companies and the academic sector.

Over the course of this research project, a total of 39 prototypes have been created and it is expected to add another ten in the short term, with six products entering the pre-commercial phase and obtaining more than 20 innovations in processes and technology related to water management and treatment. In terms of patents, Abengoa has already obtained one from this project and is working on various processes that it expects to generate up to four more. Furthermore, 13 new jobs have been created thanks to the project, while the research work involved around 130 professionals.

This project demonstrates how Abengoa is reinforcing its commitment to search for innovative solutions in the water sector, increasing its investment in its R&D program. The company is currently working to improve existing water solutions by developing cutting edge technologies in desalination and for reusing and treating waste water and industrial water in order to stay at the forefront of this sector and maintain its competitive advantage.
