The Focus-Abengoa Foundation and F.O. Licht open the 12th edition of World Biofuels 2013 in Seville

May 23, 2013

  • During the conference, participants will analyse the problem of managing waste and its use in producing biofuels as well as the outlook for the biofuels market in 2013, among other issues.

Seville, 23 May 2013. The Focus-Abengoa Foundation and F.O. Licht today opened the 12th edition of World Biofuels 2013 at the headquarters of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation in the Hospital de los Venerables, Seville. The event was attended by Javier Garóz Neira, CEO of Abengoa Bioenergy; Christoph Berg, executive director of F.O. Licht, and Anabel Morillo León, director general of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation.

World Biofuels has become a leading forum among experts from the biofuels and biodiesel sectors in the world’s largest markets, including Hans van Steen, head of the European Commission’s renewable energy unit, or Lars Hansen, president of the European Biofuels Technology Platform. During the conference, participants will discuss European strategic directives related to biofuels; examine the plans to increase the role of these fuels in transport; consider the problem of waste management and its use in biofuels production; and review the prospects for the ethanol business in 2013.

The production of bioethanol from municipal solid waste is a major technological advance in the waste management model, since it increases the recovery rate, minimises the carbon footprint and generates major benefits for society. Abengoa has spent years working to develop a solution that will efficiently manage municipal solid waste (MSW) while simultaneously producing energy in a sustainable way.

The 12th edition of World Biofuels will be attended by Juan Ignacio Zoido, mayor of Seville, and Manuel Sánchez Ortega, CEO of Abengoa, who will oversee the closing ceremony and will give an analysis of the most important points discussed over the two days.

This initiative forms part of the activities of the Focus-Abengoa Forum on Energy and Climate Change, which promotes initiatives in the field of energy research and the analysis of questions and issues related to renewable energy and business. The purpose of the forum is to contribute to the debate on the changing energy model, from a multidisciplinary perspective.

World Biofuels 2013 aims to promote, through public discussions, a genuine open platform for the research, presentation and debate of ideas and results through any actions deemed to be appropriate at any given time according to the issues to be analysed.

Focus-Abengoa Foundation

The Focus-Abengoa Foundation was created in 1982 as a result of the cultural work begun in 1972 by Abengoa with the publication of the works Temas Sevillanos (Themes of Seville) and Iconografía de Sevilla (Iconography of Seville). A collection of documents, books and engravings on the Kingdom of Seville and by Sevillian authors was created during the same period. This initial cultural work showed Abengoa’s directors the importance of the company’s involvement in activities that directly benefit society, beyond the firm’s core technology work, which led to the creation of the Seville Cultural Fund Foundation. The Hospital de los Venerables, a 17th century monument and the headquarters of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation in Seville, has housed the Diego Velázquez Research Centre, a leading institution for studying and disseminating the Baroque era and the Sevillian period of this universally renowned artist, since the acquisition of Velázquez’s Santa Rufina by the Foundation in 2007.
