  • The award, created in honour of the art historian Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez, aims to promote research work about Spanish baroque art and its relationship with Europe and America.

Seville, March 21 2013.- The Focus-Abengoa Foundation has announced the fourth edition of the Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez Baroque Art International Prize in honour of the art historian Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez, which seeks to recognise innovative projects that advance the study and research of Spanish baroque art and its relationship with Europe and America. The award is worth 24,000 Euros.

Created in 2009, this award from the Focus-Abengoa Foundation also recognises the selfless, passionate and unbroken collaboration that Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez (1935-2010), an exceptional historian of Spanish and Italian baroque art, university lecturer and director of the Museo del Prado, had with this institution.

Submitted projects must be original and unpublished, carried out individually or as a team, and must not have received any other awards or be committed to publication. They may be written in Spanish, English, French, Italian or German. The jury for the prize, which will be appointed by the Foundation’s board of trustees and will comprise international experts in this field, will also assess the multidisciplinary and participatory approaches of the submitted works.

Works should be sent, together with the required documentation (summary of the work and a brief CV of the author) by certified mail with acknowledgement of receipt to the headquarters of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation, at Hospital de los Venerables, Plaza de los Venerables, 8 (41004 Sevilla), marking the envelope with “IV Premio Internacional Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez Arte del Barroco”.

The deadline for submission of original copies is 30 September 2013.

The complete terms and conditions of the award are available at

Focus-Abengoa Foundation

The Focus-Abengoa Foundation was created in 1982 as a result of the cultural work begun in 1972 by Abengoa with the publication of the works Temas Sevillanos (Themes of Seville) and Iconografía de Sevilla (Iconography of Seville). A collection of documents, books and engravings on the Kingdom of Seville and by Sevillian authors was created during the same period. This initial cultural work showed Abengoa’s directors the importance of the company’s involvement in activities that directly benefit society, beyond the firm’s core technology work, which led to the creation of the Seville Cultural Fund Foundation. The Hospital de los Venerables, a 17th century monument and the headquarters of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation in Seville, has housed the Diego Velázquez Research Centre, a leading institution for studying and disseminating the Baroque era and the Sevillian period of this universally renowned artist, following the acquisition of Velázquez’s Santa Rufina by the Foundation in 2007.
