Abengoa will carry out a new electricity transmission project in Peru

February 22, 2013

  • The project worth approximately $160 million will enable part of the country’s electricity to be supplied in an efficient and sustainable way.
  • Abengoa will carry out the engineering, construction, maintenance and operations of a total of 354 km.

Seville, February 22, 2013. Abengoa (MCE: ABG.B), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, has been selected by the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mining through the private investment promotion agency ProInversion, to develop and operate a new electricity transmission project in the Cuzco region. The project worth approximately $160 million will enable part of the country’s energy demand to be supplied in an efficient and sustainable way.

Abengoa will be responsible for carrying out the engineering, design, construction, maintenance and start-up of the three electricity transmission lines, which will cover more than 350 km, ensuring the highest levels of quality at every stage of the project. The works are expected to take 38 months, from the start of the project through to putting the lines into operation, while the concession to manage the lines, which has also been awarded to Abengoa, will be for 30 years.

The project consists of three transmission lines from Machupicchu to Tintaya, covering a total distance of 353.9 km (Machupicchu–Quencoro, 153 km; Quencoro–Onocora, 116 km; and Onocora–Tintaya, 84.9 km), as well as connections to the Quencoro and Quencoro Nueva substations, construction of two new substations in Quencoro and Onocora, and the extension of the substations in Suriray, Quencoro and Tintaya Nueva.

The Machupicchu–Quencoro–Onocora–Tintaya transmission line and associated substations are designed to transport electricity to the main demand centers in southern Peru, mainly to the hydroelectric power plants of Machupicchu, Santa Teresa, Pucará and Quillabamba, as well as completing the improvements to the National Interconnected Electricity System (SEIN). The project will contribute to resolving the problems of overloads, instability and congestion on the lines that currently operate in the south east part of the country.

Abengoa is carrying out other electricity transmission projects in Peru, including the Chilca-Marcona-Ocoña-Montalvo line, which covers a total of 872 km.

This new project will expand Abengoa’s experience of transmission lines, consolidating its leadership position in this sector in Latin America, where it has more than 20,000 km of this type of transmission lines. Furthermore, it has participated in developing more than 2,400 km of electricity transport infrastructures in Peru.
