Abengoa leading the way in flagging the carbon footprints of products and services

August 23, 2012

Seville, August 23, 2012.- Abengoa (MCE: ABG), an international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, has relied on specific methodologies developed internally to label the CO2 emissions generated from the production of more than 15 products and services in 2012.

In calculating the carbon footprint of these products and services, Abengoa has fallen back on its own Integrated Sustainability Management System (ISMS), which comprises its greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory for 2011, verified externally in accordance with the ISO 14064 standard; the system of corporate social responsibility indicators; and the environmental management system, thus enabling the company to manage and report the social, economic and environmental footprint of its numerous business activities.

The path taken by the company since 2008 in developing its own greenhouse gas inventory, coupled with its own environmental management system has therefore allowed it to calculate the carbon footprint of these products and services, a further indication of its firm commitment to protecting the environment.

The process is based on the GHG Protocol Life Cycle Analysis, an international protocol devised by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) for calculating and reporting the GHG emissions of products and services over their life cycle, and also on the Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 2050, which is used to certify GHG emissions during the production life cycle of products and services.

Thanks to its own internal management system, Abengoa has managed to cushion the impact of its activities by measuring and comparing the carbon footprint of its projects and setting itself clear targets for improvement. In 2011, the company was successful in reducing its emissions by 361,212 t of CO2 in comparison to the GHG 2010 inventory, on the back of the annual plans that Abengoa rolls out with the aim of curbing the emissions generated by its activities. To date, the company has signed agreements with over 20,000 suppliers worldwide, requiring them to disclose their emissions or to undertake to implement a reporting system for their emissions within the term of six months.

Thanks to its sterling work in promoting sustainability, Abengoa was awarded the Spanish edition of the European Business Award for the Environment in March, under the business management for sustainable development category, in recognition of its system for managing greenhouse gas emissions and reduction plans, a project the company embarked on back in 2008.

With this initiative, Abengoa has cemented its position as a leading company in the development of innovative technological solutions aimed at sustainable development and has become a benchmark in the field of environmental sustainability and in labeling and preparing inventories of CO2 emissions.
