Abengoa to develop new electricity transmission project in Chile

June 25, 2012

  • The project will enable part of the energy requirements of the mining operations in northern Chile to be supplied efficiently and sustainably with an investment of US$ 45 million.
  • Abengoa will be responsible for the engineering, construction and maintenance of the 80 km transmission line.

Seville, June 25, 2012.- Abengoa, the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, is to construct a transmission line for Sierra Gorda SCM in Chile. The project, which will require an investment of US$ 45 million, will enable part of the energy requirements of the mining operations in northern Chile to be supplied efficiently and sustainably.

The new 80 km line will cross the Atacama Desert from north to south. Abengoa will be responsible for the engineering, construction and maintenance of the transmission line for a 20 year period, which is due to come into operation in 2013.

The line will begin at the Encuentro substation, one of the key nodes in the north Chile interconnected system, and will end at the Sierra Gorda substation, which lends its name to the project.

This new project, which is one of the primary electrical connections between the Norte Grande Interconnected System (SING) and the major mining operations of Chile’s Antofagasta Region, will increase Abengoa’s experience of transmission lines, consolidating its leadership position in this sector in Latin America, where it has developed more than 20,000 km of electricity transport infrastructure.
