Abengoa selected by the Brazilian Development Bank to develop a second generation ethanol plant in Brazil based on sugar cane

January 12, 2012

  • The project forms part of the PAISS Brazilian innovation support program.
  • Abengoa will produce bioethanol and biobutanol using sugar cane straw and bagasse.

Seville, January 12, 2012. Abengoa, the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, has been selected by the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) and FINEP, the promotion and investment agency for studies and projects, to adapt its second generation ethanol technology to produce ethanol from sugar cane biomass. The project, which forms part of the Industrial Innovation Program for the Sugar Energy Sector (PAISS), will enable Abengoa to produce bioethanol and biobutanol from sugar cane straw and bagasse.

Abengoa will be responsible for implementing the technology required for the project, as well as undertaking the engineering work to develop a plant with the capacity to generate 100 million liters of ethanol per annum.

Abengoa has the necessary experience and proprietary technology, which it uses at its plants in Europe and the USA, especially in the plant that it is currently developing in Hugoton, Kansas, with a similar capacity and which produces ethanol from corn biomass using enzymatic hydrolysis.

The Industrial Innovation Program for the Sugar Energy Sector (PAISS) was launched in March 2011 thanks to the collaboration between the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) and FINEP, the promotion agency. The program has been allocated funds of around €435 million.

Brazil is currently the largest sugar cane producer in the world and the second largest producer of ethanol, after the USA, and so the use of sugar cane straw and bagasse offers an alternative solution for bioethanol production.

This new project will consolidate Abengoa’s position as a leading company in the bioenergy sector in Brazil, where the firm has been applying innovative technology solutions for sustainable development for more than 30 years.
