Abengoa enters water business in Romania

March 31, 2011

Seville, March 31.- Abengoa, the international company that develops innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, will carry out the project aimed at expanding and renewing two wastewater treatment plants (WTP) in Romania. The contract, worth over 20 million euros, was awarded by public companies Apa Serv Alexandria and Apa Brasov.

These treatment facilities, owned by the public companies in charge of the country’s water supply and treatment management, take in wastewater from the cities of Videle and Brasov and other small surrounding communities in central and southern Romania, as well as the effluents from the region’s industrial areas.

This project will enable treatment capacity to increase to 116,000 cubic meters per day, thus gaining the capability to treat the wastewater discharges generated by some 600,000 inhabitants.

Romania’s recent accession to the European Union required the adaptation of the quality of its wastewater discharges to meet common EU regulations. This contract, Abengoa’s first in Romania related with water management, is intended to help the country meet these requirements, improve its infrastructures, particularly water-related infrastructure, and make headway in the commitment undertaken to accommodate sustainable development and modernity.

This new project award, by means of which Abengoa will begin its activity in Romania’s water business, underscores the company’s extensive international experience in the field of water management. Abengoa has been carrying out these types of projects for more than 20 years, thereby consolidating a leading position in this sector in northern Africa, India, China, Latin America, and the United States.

Abengoa (MCE: ABG) is an international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability development in the energy and environment sectors, generating energy from the sun, producing biofuels, desalinating sea water, and recycling industrial waste. (www.abengoa.com).
