Abengoa advances with its commitment on the inventory of greenhouse gases emissions

January 20, 2011

  • Abengoa has analyzed the system in place at Facel for calculating the GHG emissions generated by its supply of electrical cable and found it to be in order.
  • The system is capable of calculating the emissions linked to the process of extracting the raw material, transforming it, manufacturing electrical cable and transporting this cable to the end customer.

Sevilla, January 20, 2011 - Fernando Martínez Salcedo, General Secretary of Sustainability at Abengoa, and Francesc Acín, Chairman of Asociación Española de Fabricantes de Conductores Eléctricos Aislados y de Fibra Óptica (Facel), have signed a collaboration agreement to implement a system for calculating the emissions associated with the supply of electrical cables between associate companies of Facel, which will be validated by Abengoa.

Companies belonging to Facel will therefore report their emissions based on three concepts: Emissions associated with the extraction or mining of raw materials; those associated with the process of transforming the raw material, and lastly those associated with the manufacture of electrical cable and transport to the end client.

This agreement was made possible thanks to the prior analysis conducted by a joint Abengoa and Facel working group, which was created with the specific aim of pinpointing the best way of reporting and defining a schedule for implementing the system and for communicating this among Abengoa companies, bearing in mind the unique characteristics of these particular products.

Since June 2008, Abengoa has been using a groundbreaking GHG measurement system that not only calculates the direct and indirect emissions of Abengoa, but also those generated from products and services procured from third parties. Thanks to this innovative system, Abengoa now boasts complete annual GHG inventories for 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Abengoa (MCE: ABG) is an international company that applies innovative technology solutions to sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, generating electricity from the sun, producing biofuels, desalinating sea water and recycling industrial waste. (www.abengoa.com)
