Befesa is awarded the biggest desalination plant in Tunisia

July 14, 2010

The construction of the project involves an investment of 70 million euros.

The plant can produce 50,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day.

The income from the water production concession is estimated to exceed 220 million euros.

Madrid, July 14, 2010.- The National Society of Water Development and Distribution (SONEDE) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of Tunisia have awarded to the consortium between Befesa and Princesse Groupe the 20-year project for the design, construction and development of a sea water desalination plant in Djerba Island, in the Gulf of Gabes.

This important project is framed within the set of proceedings implemented by Tunisia Government for the promotion and development of non-conventional water resources, such as desalination, in order to solve the water scarcity and low-quality issues suffered by the country, as well as to meet the growing demand, which is even higher in the major tourist destinations, such as Djerba Island.

The agreement, which will involve an investment of 70 million euros, will be developed under the DBOOT modality (Design, Build, Own, Operate and Transfer). The total income from the sale of water during the 20 years of the concession is estimated to exceed 200 million euros, since the annual income is calculated to amount to more than 11 million euros.

The plant will have a production capacity of 50,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day, which will make it possible to supply a population of more than 250,000 inhabitants. This infrastructure, which will use the inverse-osmosis technology, will be the biggest desalination plant in Tunisia.

Befesa Agua will undertake the construction of the plant, whereas Befesa-Princesse Groupe will be in charge of the operation and maintenance.

For Javier Molina, Befesa’s Chairman, “for Befesa, this award means the consolidation of one of the world market's leaders in desalination, and, especially, in Northern Africa".

Princesse Groupe is a Tunisian business and financial holding with a strong presence in the national market, and, among its activities, it is worth mentioning the recent foundation of its first Tunisian bank. Also, it operates a small desalination plant.

Befesa Medio Ambiente (BMA) is an international company which offers solutions to the management and recycling of industrial waste, to the management and generation of water, taking into account the social responsibility in order to create a sustainable world. (
