The TEcoAgua R&D project led by Befesa Agua has been approved within the 5th CENIT-E program

November 26, 2009

Seville, 26 November 2009.- The Ministry of Science and Innovation has announced the approval of the TEcoAgua project on sustainable technologies for the integral water cycle, led by Befesa Agua, as part of the fifth program on Strategic National Consortiums for Technical Research (CENIT-E).

The purpose of the CENIT program is to finance large-scale industrial research projects of a strategic nature in future technology areas. They should have a wide scope and potential international influence and represent a qualitative leap in R&D collaboration between companies and research entities. Some 18 public-private cooperation projects have been approved in this edition of the program, receiving €200 million in subsidies.

The TEcoAgua project will be developed by a consortium of 13 companies and 22 research centres, which were selected based on multi-sector and multi-regional criteria and scientific excellence. The total budget will be €28 million and the project will last for four years.

The main objective of the initiative is to develop sustainable technologies for generating alternative water resources. It will consider advanced technologies for recovering polluted natural resources, the regeneration and reuse of waste water, and new desalination processes, among others. Another key aspect to be developed by the project is the conservation of existing resources and the optimisation of water management in terms of energy efficiency, as well as mitigating climate change.

Javier Molina, chairman of Befesa, expressed his satisfaction "at receiving the necessary support for this project, which will contribute to better management of the available water resources and to generating new and alternative resources. Befesa is committed to R&D as a means for growth, demonstrated by the opening of its R&D centre in October, which will be a key element in the success of the project."

Befesa, the environmental services subsidiary of Abengoa, focuses on providing environmental services to industry and the construction of environmental infrastructures. It is a public listed company with a market capitalisation in excess of €325 million (close 2008). (www.befesa.com).
