17 September 2009. Abengoa has joined the United Nations' Seal the Deal! Initiative, which seeks to promote a global agreement on climate change at the next summit in Copenhagen and to raise awareness among the public, politicians and institutions about the importance of reaching a post-Kyoto agreement that involves every country.
Abengoa hopes that a new text to replace the Kyoto Protocol will come out of the meeting in December and highlights that it is a unique opportunity to achieve a multilateral agreement that appropriately addresses the issue of how to tackle the negative anthropogenic effects on the climate system.
Felipe Benjumea, Chairman of Abengoa, said that "as a company dedicated to the search for innovative solutions for sustainable development in the infrastructure, environment and energy sectors, Abengoa is confident that a global agreement will be reached on climate change that will establish the basis for a global system based on low carbon economies. There are no longer any doubts that climate change is a serious consequence of industrial activity, and the need to promote a new economic paradigm based on the development of renewable energies and clean fuels is now clear. To achieve this green "New Deal" it will be essential to build a sustainable future for everyone".
The United Nations has launched a campaign to promote a global agreement on climate change during the Copenhagen summit that takes place in December. The Seal the Deal! campaign aims to raise awareness among the public, politicians and institutions about the importance of reaching a comprehensive post-Kyoto agreement on climate change that involves every country.
