Telvent to install toll system in the new Bilbao southern bypass

August 11, 2009

August 11, 2009.- Telvent (NASDAQ: TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, has announced today that it will install the toll management system for the new Bilbao southern bypass (South Metropolitan Highway), which was built to avoid the traffic congestion caused by the more than 100,000 vehicles that pass through Bilbao along the A8 every day. The contract, awarded by Interbiak, is valued at almost eight million euros.

This project will improve traffic flow in the Bilbao metropolitan area and reduce traffic congestion, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and difficulties for drivers. This in turn will lead to a fall in accident rates and an increase in users' safety.

The system that Telvent will install on this stretch of the new variant is mixed, as it combines conventional and electronic tolling, including an improvement of two "free flow" gantries to detect the entry point of vehicles. In addition to supplying the management software, Telvent will also provide the equipment needed for a toll that ensures security for collection management processes.

The A8 provides service to travelers wishing to enter and leave the city, as well as to those going to towns located near Bilbao. This causes lengthy traffic jams on a daily basis, along with intense traffic flow. An effort is being made with the South Metropolitan Highway bypass to distribute through traffic and incoming and outgoing traffic in order to reduce traffic congestion problems. The toll system to be installed in the new southern bypass will be integrated into the section of the A8 that lies within the province of Biscay. Hence, internal traffic will be led to the A8, and through traffic and incoming traffic will be channeled to the new southern bypass.

This contract reinforces the efforts made by Bilbao to favor sustainable mobility. Telvent has recently been awarded another contract to implement the Barik card for the Bilbao Metro, which will speed up passenger access and make daily trips easier for almost 300,000 users of the Bizkaia public transport system, thereby promoting the use of public transport.

Both projects highlight the trust placed by the authorities of Biscay in Telvent's technological leadership in the development of solutions that promote improved mobility and reinforce citizens' safety.
