Telvent participates in the study "IT Contribution to Sustainability in Transportation in Spain"

June 24, 2009

June 24, 2009 - Telvent (NASDAQ: TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, was a participant in the "IT Contribution to Sustainability in Transportation in Spain" study conducted by the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAI in its Spanish acronym). This study, presented today at the RAI headquarters in Madrid, Spain, received collaboration from more than 60 experts from different administrative bodies, universities, and technology, energy and transportation companies.

The study analyzes a wide range of transportation-related aspects to which information technologies can be applied in order to minimize environmental impact. To this end, Telvent contributed company knowledge and broad expertise in the application of strategies based on information technologies and services that aid in improving road safety and urban sustainability.

Over the last two decades, these technologies have come to be the avenue for obtaining the information required to control and improve business processes. In the case of transportation there has been a true revolution arising from the application of these technologies to mobility management.

User information systems, via internet or telephone communications, are an obvious example of technologies that have a very positive impact on mobility. These systems provide drivers with up-to-date information in real-time on road conditions to help them determine the best routes. This alleviates city traffic flow and reduces both noise pollution and contaminant emissions. These services will be available inside vehicles themselves in the near future. Telvent also offers other technologies that help to promote intermodality, the use of public transportation, and fare integration among the different means of transportation, parking facilities and other services, helping to improve operational efficiency and simplify people's daily traveling activities.

Security is another aspect which has benefitted tremendously from IT applications to transportation, as proven by the drop in accident rates. This is the product of solutions such as those applied to speed control, systems for detecting, managing and responding to infrastructure-related incidents, in addition to violation management and dynamic lane management systems, among others.

According to José Montoya, President of Telvent's Transportation division, "Information technologies are now a key element in facilitating business activities, achieving higher efficiency, strengthening the capacity to adapt to today's changing conditions; in short, ITs give rise to a higher degree of satisfaction and better customer and user service."

Telvent has executed groundbreaking projects in applying these technologies to the transportation sector, examples of which are the following: implementation of the 511 Traveler System for the New York and Pennsylvania Departments of Transportation in the United States; the creation of the Automatic Violation Processing Center for the National Transportation Authority of Spain; urban traffic management systems in cities such as Meishan and Xinxian, in China; Jeddah, Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia; and Beirut, Lebanon; SmartToll toll systems like the one implemented on three federal highways in Brazil; and electronic toll systems, such as the system executed for the Newport-Pell Bridge in Rhode Island, in the United States.
