Befesa awarded the contract to modernise the Canal del Viar in Seville (Spain)

May 25, 2009

Madrid, 25 May 2009. The Department of Environment of the Andalusian Administration, through the Andalusian Water Agency, has awarded Befesa a contract worth more than €13 million to modernise the Canal del Viar, which will allow it to be used for both irrigation and for supplying the city of Seville.

The Canal del Viar, which dates from 1953, is 84 kilometres long. It currently transports water from the Pintado reservoir to irrigate approximately 12,000 hectares on the floodplain on the right hand bank of the River Guadalquivir.

The awarded works form part of the actions required to connect the Melonares reservoir, with a capacity of 185 cubic hectometres of water, with the supply system of EMASESA, the metropolitan drinking water and sewerage company of Seville.

The works will make use of 30 kilometres of the existing Canal del Viar, downstream from the Melonares reservoir, where Befesa will carry out works to repair, adapt, reconstruct and improve its structure, as well as work on the aqueducts, tunnels, drainage systems, service paths and bridges. It will also install the regulation and automation systems for the Canal.

Javier Molina, Chairman of Befesa, said, “These works will contribute to guaranteeing the water supply to more than one million inhabitants in the province of Seville, in terms of quantity and quality”.

Befesa, the environmental services subsidiary of Abengoa, focuses on providing environmental services to industry and the construction of environmental infrastructures. It is a public listed company with a market capitalisation in excess of €325 million (close 2008). (
