Telvent (NASDAQ: TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, has been awarded a contract by AENA - Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea, the Spanish airport and air navigation services provider - to update the radio communications network at the Lanzarote airport. Telvent will accomplish this update by implementating a TETRA digital mobile radio system.
The new TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) system will switch and control 16 radio channels, enabling communications among users and integrating the network with other services such as telephone and ground-to-air communications. The system will service indoor areas with a TETRA repeater and more than 1,500 meters of radiating cable; other airport areas such as basements and tunnels also will be covered by the system.
The technology provided by Telvent will yield the communications required to optimize day-to-day airport operations and maintenance, increase efficiency, reduce response times, and improve overall service to airport customers. Manuel Sánchez Ortega, Telvent's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, expressed his satisfaction with this new prospect. "The Lanzarote project strengthens our working relationship with AENA, with whom we hope to continue identifying opportunities to apply the best communications technology available to the benefit of passengers".
The TETRA system is a platform for private radio communications similar to GSM mobile phone. This system is used to provide voice and data services to the airport services. Telvent is the company that has successfully implemented the TETRA system in more Aena airports in Spain, including Seville, Minorca, Ibiza, Vigo and A Coruña, in addition to providing services on this platform such as the airport Madrid-Barajas. Lanzarote project is not the only one in which Telvent is working with AENA, it is also working in a further extension of the programming and delivery of TETRA terminals at the airport of Madrid-Barajas.
