Inaugural "Specialist in Carbon Markets" course starts organised by the Focus-Abengoa Foundation in collaboration with the IETA

November 4, 2008

Seville, 4 November 2008.- The Focus-Abengoa Foundation, in collaboration with the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), today launched the first Specialist in Carbon Markets course, one of the initiatives being carried out by the Focus-Abengoa Forum on Energy and Climate Change, and which aims to train professionals with an integrated and global perspective in the carbon markets, at an international level, and to prepare them to be able to operate in these markets.

The opening event was attended by Jon Ander Sánchez Morán, the economy and employment delegate from the Seville City Council; Friso de Jong, carbon finance analyst from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD); and Carlos Bousoño Crespo, corporate social responsibility manager of Abengoa. All agreed about highlighting the use of carbon markets as a tool in the fight against climate change and about the financial opportunities that these markets offer, which range from consultancy through to training and technological innovation for reducing emissions. They also highlighted the need to understand and integrate the control of carbon emissions as an additional factor in a company’s decision making, and the need to develop capabilities in this area, as the key element in the sustainable development of transition economies and the economies of lesser developed countries.

This course, which brings together professionals from around the world, intends to become one of the core foundations of the activities of the Focus-Abengoa Forum. The growing global awareness about the reality of climate change and the initiatives that have arisen to control it, have led to the creation of a new market that requires highly specialised managers.

The city of Seville was chosen to host this important meeting, benefiting this regional capital, which over the course of a few days will become a focus for knowledge and discussion on one of the most important issues of the international agenda: climate change and training professionals in carbon markets, one of the principal tools for tackling this problem.

It will also be an opportunity for companies from Seville to host an important group of specialists from around the world, who are prepared to share their experiences about the recently created carbon markets and the business opportunities that they present.

Antonio Ruiz de Elvira, Professor of Applied Physics at the University of Alcalá de Henares and Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the European Climate Forum, was chosen to open this course with a presentation about the factors that demonstrate that climate change is a reality and its effects.

The course boasts the Zeroemissions accreditation, the Abengoa company that provides global solutions for climate change, since Zeroemissions has calculated the course’s carbon footprint so that the greenhouse gas emissions associated with holding the course can be subsequently offset.

The International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) is an independent non-profit organisation based in Switzerland. It comprises more than 175 affiliated members, including the largest companies in the market, and is dedicated to establishing effective systems for trading greenhouse gas emissions by the private sector.

The Focus-Abengoa Forum on Energy and Climate Change, launched by Abengoa through the Focus-Abengoa Foundation, aims to promote an open platform for research, disclosure and confrontation of ideas and results in relation to renewable energies and aspects related to climate change, through public discussion actions. This forum is focussed on those fields in which Abengoa can make relevant contributions in the different areas of international, industrial and technological relations or in any other sphere, thanks to its business experience, in relation to the triple objective of economic, social and environmental development that define sustainable development.
