Telvent, Befesa and Page Iberica team up to manage the hydrological information system for the Andalusian Mediterranean basin

July 8, 2008

Madrid, July 8, 2008. – Telvent, Befesa and Page announced today that they will handle the maintenance, the update, and the exploitation of the Automated Hydrological Information System (AHIS) of the Andalusian Mediterranean Basin (AMB). The contract, awarded to the joint venture by the Andalusian Water Agency, exceeds 3.2 million euros.

One of the aims of the AMB is to improve water distribution and quality, as well as ensure its supply, for which optimal operation of the hydrological information network is essential. The maintenance of that network will enable the integrated and sustainable management of the AHIS. This system offers basic, quality, real-time information on hydrological conditions and, in general, on the status of the entire basin: ranging from precipitation in a given place to reservoir and river levels in the area.

At present, drought and flooding are two of the meteorological phenomena that warrant most attention. The system update and exploitation phases of the project, including the installation of new sensors and cleaning channels of rivers and canals, will facilitate more accurate measures of the level of circulating water. That information will help in early decision-making in order to deal with these problems, thereby minimizing the impact of potential swells, overflows, floods, etc.

Finally, those aspects of the network more limited at present will be improved, from the viewpoint of the potential benefits of the system, with a view to increasing both their reliability and profitability.

Telvent, Befesa, and Page already manage several AHIS nationally. This new contract places them among the leading companies in this sector, with a concern for managing the control of a resource as crucial as water. These works will allow the Companies not only to provide service for the existing installations, but also to propose potential technological enhancements for improving management of water resources in the region.

The southern basin encompasses an area of almost 18,500 Km2 throughout the easternmost area of Andalusia, providing service to a population of over two million inhabitants, to which are added, at least once a year, another 600,000 people who choose the region for their vacation destination. Tourism and intensive greenhouse-based agricultural activity have become the main economic assets inthe basin. Achieving optimal and efficient management of water resources is therefore a key factor in protecting these economic assets and ensuring supply to the population.
