Madrid, June 20, 2008 – Telvent (NASDAQ: TLVT), the IT company for a secure and sustainable world, along with the Information and Communication Technology Association of Spain (AETIC, by its Spanish acronym) and the Regional Ministry of Innovation of the Government of Andalusia, has taken part in the First Information Technology and Sustainability Forum that was held on 17 and 18 June in Seville (Spain).
This meeting came about as a response to the need to create a forum for social debate and reflection on the part of those in charge of the information and communication technology (ICT) sector, the government, and other public and private institutions, as well as the political sector and the media. Its aim is to propose technological solutions and initiatives for preserving the environment.
Modern societies with advanced welfare systems are based on high consumption of non-renewable resources, leading to the deterioration of the environment. Society finds itself at a crucial point at which the actions we take to ensure sustainability today could lead to an irreversible situation tomorrow. Telvent works in the technology sector to provide solutions for various industrial sectors, helping them to become more efficient and respectful with regard to the environment. Even so, it is inevitable that the very energy consumption required for daily activity is a problem in itself. The focus of this debate, therefore, was striking a balance between achieving the most benefits while making the least impact on the environment.
Manuel Sánchez Ortega, president of Telvent, highlighted the significant role that ICTs play in the popularisation, treatment and therefore solution of many problems related to sustainable development. He also added: “In 2007, the debate on sustainable development and climate change was a hot topic, leading it to become one of the most significant challenges of the coming years. As such, we at Telvent support the Information Technology and Sustainability Forum as being an effective way to fight climate change."
This first forum, which will hopefully become an annual event, has had a great deal of support and involvement from the political, technological and social sectors: Felipe Gonzalez President of the advisory committee of EU, Cristina Garmendia, Minister of Science and Innovation; Francisco Vallejo The Andalusian Counsellor of Innovation, Science and Enterprise and Alfredo Sánchez Monteseirín, Mayor of Seville, among others, have all participated in the event.
Telvent (NASDAQ: TLVT), the IT company for a secure and sustainable world, specialises in providing high value-added products, services and solutions to sectors such as Energy, Transport, the Environment and Government, as well as in Global IT Services. Telvent’s innovative technological solutions and proven experience enable leading worldwide companies to manage their operational and business processes in an efficient and secure manner.(www.telvent.com)
