Telvent to develop in Leon European border security and control R&D programs

April 14, 2008

  • Telvent will hire 30 new people at INTECO's Security Center.
  • The technologies applied to identification and documental verification will assure efficiency of border security management.

Madrid, April 14, 2008 – Telvent (Nasdaq: TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, will roll out the Identica project, together with the National Institute of Communication Technologies, in Leon (INTECO). Identica is an R&D project aimed at developing the efficiency of the most up-to-date and innovative individual identification and document verification techniques on a single platform. The integration of these technologies will improve border security management by providing complete and efficient management of individual identification processes.

This project, valued at more than €6 million, will be developed at INTECO’s headquarters. Its roll out will require the incorporation of 30 new employees that will strengthen Telvent’s presence in Castilla-Leon, a presence dating back to 1982.

Telvent will focus at INTECO on the development of leading-edge information technologies for integral management of borders, citizens, identification based on biometric techniques (automatic fingerprint and iris identification systems, and automatic facial and voice recognition systems), the issuing of electronic identity documents (eDNI), and systems linked with road safety and traffic accident prevention.

With this project, Telvent will improve services for private citizens and public administrations by creating a “common, secure space” responding to the needs of the European Union in the fight against illegal immigration and terrorism.

“Telvent’s policy is to contribute to the actual challenges society must face in matters related with sustainability and security; and, this center represents our commitment towards that. We are satisfied to be able to contribute, together with INTECO, towards achievement of these objectives”, said Manuel Sanchez Ortega, chairman of CEO of Telvent.

According to Enrique Martinez, general manager of INTECO, “The fact that projects as significant as Identica, the basis for Europe’s future border control system, are being developed mostly by Spanish companies is a true testament to the level the security industry in Spain is achieving. Moreover, a significant portion of the corresponding research activities are being carried out in Leon, thus demonstrating consolidation of INTECO’s important role as a reference for Spain’s security technology industry”
