February 11, 2008

  • The Mudéjar roofing framework on the Palace of Peter I, in the Alcázar of Seville, topic of the winning thesis.
  • The author, Cecilia Cañas Palop, is an associate professor at the University School of Building Surveying of Seville.

Seville, 11th February 2008.- Cecilia Cañas Palop, associate professor at the University School of Building Surveying of Seville, has won the 2007 Prize for the Best Doctoral Thesis on a Sevillian Theme for her study entitled The Mudéjar Roofing Framework on the Palace of Peter I in the Alcázar of Seville: Comprehensive Analysis and Proposals for Restoration. This prize, which the Focus-Abengoa Foundation has been awarding since 1983, comes with a 3,000 euro purse and publishes the study in order to ensure its maximum dissemination and social recognition.

The jury, presided over by Santiago Grisolía, praised “the scientific rigour, the exceptional nature of the roofing framework in the context of Spain’s heritage, the responsibility entailed in its urgent restoration and the crucial social transcendence of the monumental complex analysed”. They also stressed that “this is the most extensive, rigorously scientific study undertaken to date on this topic”. The Palace of Peter I is used to accommodate the members of the Spanish royal family and prominent personalities visiting Seville.

Appointed by the Board of Trustees of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation, the jury for this 25th edition included Antonio-Miguel Bernal, Emilio Gómez Piñol, José Manuel Macarro Vera, Alfonso Pleguezuelo Hernández, Ramón Queiro Filgueira, Valeriano Ruíz Hernández and Enrique Valdivieso González.

One of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation’s top priorities is to educate people, hence its ongoing efforts to promote education, to help research and to recognise activities linked to these endeavours.

The Focus-Abengoa Foundation was created in 1982 as the outcome of the cultural efforts begun by Abengoa back in 1972 with its publication of Sevillian Topics and Iconography of Seville. During this same period, a collection of documents, books and engravings on the Kingdom of Seville and Sevillian authors was also amassed. This initial cultural impetus led Abengoa’s leaders to realise the importance of going beyond the company’s merely technological functions with activities that would benefit society. Thus, the Fondo de Cultura de Sevilla Foundation was born.
