Telvent modernizes meteorology infrastructure in several Spanish airports

December 26, 2007

  • New weather assistance systems step up security in seven national airports in 2007
  • Total National Institute of Meteorology (INM) investment this year in these projects exceeds 2.5 million euros

Madrid, December 26, 2007 - Telvent (Nasdaq: TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, announced today the implementation of several projects in 2007 for the National Institute of Meteorology (INM) to improve security in seven Spanish airports. These projects have resulted in Telvent’s weather assistance systems now providing operational advantages in the airports in Burgos, Huesca, Leon, Melilla, Murcia, Seville and Valladolid, thanks to the INM’s investment of more than 2.5 million euros.

Those airports and airbases benefit from the state-of-the-art aeronautics-meteorological equipment technology, including runway data acquisition instruments and systems designed for installation in the weather center, control tower, and other airport facilities for treating, presenting, and broadcasting weather information.

Thanks to the new technological equipment and the improvement in weather radar, the airports look forward to increased efficiency in weather forecasting and the ability to establish emergency plans for heavy rain and flooding in advance and with greater accuracy. In addition, pilots will have precise, critical and quality information on runway weather and flight conditions available to them, facilitating increased security for takeoff and landing and provide greater safety for all users.

According to Manuel Sanchez Ortega, Telvent chairman and chief executive officer, "It is highly satisfying for us to be able to help the National Institute of Meteorology and the airports that benefit from these systems through these contracts. Once again, the INM has shown its confidence in Telvent and its capacity to carry out these kinds of projects, further strengthening the company’s position of leadership as a supplier of meteorological solutions in air navigation assistance."

Telvent is currently developing and implementing 24 similar projects and systems in several international airports, including five airports in Argentina, eleven in Venezuela, and eight in India. Further, Telvent is implementing a project for modernizing the Moroccan weather radar network, used for the nation’s weather watch. All systems follow WMO (World Meteorological Organization) and ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) recommendations.
