The Focus-Abengoa Foundation announces the 2007 Focus-Abengoa Painting Prize

July 19, 2007

Seville, 19 July 2007.- The Focus-Abengoa Foundation has announced a new edition of its painting competition, which is open to both professionals and amateurs from any of the EU member states and America who wish to participate in this international event. Competitors are free to choose their theme and can use any painting technique in line with the rules of the competition, which has total prize money of 36,000 euros divided into a first prize of 24,000 euros and two awards for runners-up at 6,000 euros.

In its unconditional support for culture and its social vision, the Focus-Abengoa Foundation is aiming with this new edition, not only to offer the possibility of opening up new areas in creation for seasoned artists, but also to give society the opportunity to get to know new creative artists in the field of painting. As has been demonstrated over the last few years, entry to this competition reinforces the value of the works of well-known artists and opens up new horizons for new talent, which needs both financial and social support along the road to becoming professional.

Since its early years, the Focus-Abengoa Foundation has made clear its interest in all cultural activities, not only those directly related with the city of Seville, but in all artistic, literary and scientific forms of expression, both in Spain and at international level.

Painting is one of the fields that has aroused most interest in the Foundation since its origin. The recent acquisition of the painting by Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velásquez entitled “Saint Rufina”, so closely linked to the city of Seville, serves to confirm this. Furthermore, this is one of the most attractive areas, both for the Foundation and for the creative artists as well as the general public, and proof of this is the continuous attendance by visitors to the Foundation’s temporary exhibitions and permanent collections. The prize for this competition effectively responds to the interests of support, recognition and future vision of the participating artists.

The Focus-Abengoa Foundation was set up in 1982 as a result of the cultural work which Abengoa began in 1972 with the publication of the works entitled “Sevillian Topics” and “Iconography of Seville”. During the same period, a collection was started, containing documents, books and engravings on the Kingdom of Seville and by authors from Seville. This initial cultural work made the directors of Abengoa aware of the importance of proving themselves beyond their essential technological functions with an activity that would benefit society, thus creating the Fondo de Cultura de Sevilla Foundation.
