Befesa will construct two treatment plants in the vicinity of Doñana National Park

April 18, 2006

Madrid, April 18, 2006. – The Ministry of the Environment has awarded Befesa the contract, for more than 10 million euro, for the design and construction of the wastewater grouping collectors and treatment plants for the villages of Almonte, Rociana del Condado, and Bollullos Par del Condado.

The wastewaters from the village of Almonte are currently forwarded to a wastewater treatment plant (WTP) with a lagooning system, the discharge from which is to the Santa Maria watercourse that flows through the Guadalquivir marshlands, in the Doñana National Park. This treatment plant also receives the wastewaters from Rociana and, therefore, the existing lagooning system will no longer guarantee the treatment levels demanded for the pre-park sensitive areas. On the other hand, the wastewaters from Bollullos Par del Condado are discharged, without receiving hardly any treatment as the lagooning system is in ruins, into the Cerrada and Carcava watercourses, which flow to the same area as the Santa Maria, the Doñana marshlands.

With this project, which includes the construction of the two new collectors for Almonte and Bollullos Par del Condado, four and six kilometers respectively, and the treatment plants for both villages, Befesa will guarantee the treatment levels required for sensitive areas for the population’s wastewaters. The population is expected to grow to more than 40,000.

According to Javier Molina, Befesa’s chairman, “with this new project, Befesa contributes, once again, to sustainable development and thereby fulfills one of the company’s strategic objectives by solving the wastewater problem in one of Spain’s most emblematic environmental areas, as is the case with the marshlands of the Doñana National Park. Both plants will be constructed on the existing sites to minimize environmental impacts.”
