  • Customer: Merval
  • Work: “Contract for the Supply and Installation of the Lighting, Power and Low Voltage Network System in the Tunnel. 4th Phase”

In 2005, under its railway network improvement plan, the state-owned company Ferrocarriles del Estado de Chile (EFE) contracted, through its fifth region subsidiary Metro Regional Valparaiso (MERVAL), the services of Abengoa Chile for the execution of the “Contract for the Supply and Installation of the Lighting, Power and Low Voltage Network System in the Tunnel. 4th Phase” for a total of 2.0 million US dollars on the subterranean section between the cities of Valparaiso and Viña del Mar, some 119 km from the city of Santiago de Chile.

The total extension of the project covered a 4,749-meter route, comprising four stations – Miramar, Viña del Mar, Hospital and Chorrillos – their respective tunneled inter-station sections, and El Belloto coach shed.

The overall figures for equipment supplied and installed on the project were:

  • Conductor bearer trays and rack ladders 35,652 meters
  • Galvanized steel piping 2,404 meters
  • Electric cable 264,383 meters
  • Electric power and control boards 36 units
  • Power sockets 345 units
  • Lighting equipment 1,659 units

The project was executed by Abengoa Chile in eight months, from March to November 2005, and required a total of 68,784 man/hours with an average of approximately 40 laborers per month.

This important Government-promoted railway infrastructure project was handed over on schedule to the community service and is now in full commercial operation, having improved the traveling times of the citizens within the Fifth Region.
