January 17, 2006

  • From the 21st of January, the exhibition From Herrera to Velázquez: Early Naturalism in Seville will show Saint Paul - also by Velázquez, on loan from the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña.
  • The Hospital of the Venerables in Seville has had more than 30,000 visitors since the start of the exhibition

Seville, the 13th of January. The painting " Peasant at a table", by Velázquez, on loan from the Museum of Budapest and currently on show at the Focus-Abengoa Foundation in Seville as a part of the exhibition " From Herrera to Velázquez: Early Naturalism in Seville", is to return to Budapest next Tuesday as agreed, in order to take its place in a comprehensive commemorative exhibition to mark the museum's centenary to be officially opened on the 26th of January, representing as it does the keynote piece in the city’s collection of Spanish painting.

The painting, one of the most significant pieces from the young Velázquez’s Sevillian period has been on show at the Focus-Abengoa exhibition for the last 45 days, in which time, more than 30,000 people have passed through the Hospital of the Venerables in order to see it, making it one of the most empirically successful exhibitions to be held in the city of Seville in recent years.

Concurrently, the exhibition has also been further enriched by the presence of " Saint Paul", also painted by Velázquez, and on loan from the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, which came to Seville once the extensive exhibition at Barcelona’s MNAC dedicated to the work of Caravaggio, which included Velázquez’s portrait of Saint Paul, came to an end. " Saint Paul", along with the other works of art that comprise the exhibition " Herrera to Velázquez: Early Naturalism in Seville", will remain on display at the Focus-Abengoa Foundation’s headquarters until the 28th of February, when it will travel to the Museo de Bellas Artes of Bilbao, where it can be seen until the end of May.

The Focus-Abengoa Foundation was established in 1982 as a consequence of the cultural activity initiated in 1972 by Abengoa with the publishing of the works "Sevillian Topics" and "Iconography of Seville". During the same period a collection of documents, books and prints on Seville, or by Sevillian authors, was being put together. This initial cultural activity brought Abengoa's senior management to see the importance of the company being seen outside its essential technological functions through an activity that would be of benefit to society as a whole, which in turn led to the founding of the Fundación Fondo de Cultura of Seville.
