Befesa awarded the design and execution contract for the drinking water and sewerage system works of the city of Sandino, Nicaragua

September 6, 2005

Madrid, September 6, 2005. - The European Commission, represented by its delegation in Managua, Nicaragua, has awarded Befesa Medio Ambiente, Abengoa’s leading Environmental Services company, the 10.198 million euro contract for the design and execution of the drinking water and sewerage system works in the city of Sandino (Nicaragua).

These works are part of the European Union’s Regional Reconstruction Program for Central America. The program focuses on the renewal and improvement of infrastructures, the fitting out and management of the educational, sanitary, public health and housing services in the regions of Central America that have been most affected by hurricane Mitch. Its aim is to provide support for the transformation towards a model of more sustainable development in the sectors of the four countries in which the program will be operative.

The project includes an enlargement of the city of Sandino drinking water supply network, through the construction of three catch-water pits and their corresponding installations (pumping units, electrical installation, disinfection system and ancillary works). It also includes the piping from the pits to the three new storage tanks and the connection to the existing distribution network. The three reinforced concrete pits will be capable of storing 3,700, 1,000 and 1,110 cubic meters, respectively.

The project also includes the elaboration of a project that defines the works that are required for the correct execution of the complete sewerage network, from the residential connections to final collectors that are to be used for all the wastewater from the discharges of the affected population.

And lastly, the design and construction of the Delivered Water Treatment Plant which is to have a design flow of 6,054 cubic meters per day to supply a population of 47,450. The plant will be block-designed to enable its future enlargement up to the Master Plan horizon of 2020, for when a population of 218,133 and an average flow of 22,337 cubic meters per day are foreseen.

These works will allow the population to have access to water, a lacking and essential resource, and the sewerage system and treatment works will contribute to reducing the number of contagious illnesses that are caused by bad wastewater management. This contract consolidates Befesa’s leading position in the design and construction of water treatment infrastructures.
