Madrid, 27 June 2005 – Telvent GIT S.A. (Nasdaq: TLVT), the Global RealTime IT Company, which was awarded the contract for the Almeria Ciudad Digital (Digital City) project, has completed a full-integrated communication infrastructure system, as per an agreement with the Almeria City Council, prior to the June 24 start of the 2005 Mediterranean Games. The El Toyo Advanced Services Building houses the new Data Processing Centre designed by Telvent, where information will be processed from the regional information and traffic control systems which the company has implemented in the capital of the Almeria region. The implementation of this type of advanced digital services within a technology centre environment represents a significant step forward in the development of the Information Society, particularly from a public services point of view.
The 72 traffic light junctions, which will be controlled from the central computer located in the new Data Processing Centre, will be fitted with specially designed electronics enabling signal light synchronization depending on traffic flow and other requirements.
The system utilizes a combined fibre optic and wireless communications network, which provides communications between the different organizations, in particular, the security required for hosting the games, allowing coordination with local law enforcement agencies. Input collected from CCTV (closed circuit television) systems at the points of conflict will help facilitate efficient functioning of this system, which will eventually be integrated with the operations of the General Traffic Directorate.
The Ciudad Digital project will culminate in June 2006. Group investment in R+D during 2005 will total 60 million euros, placing Telvent among the 500 European companies that invest the most in continuous innovation. The agreement signed with the Mediterranean Foundation commits Telvent to carrying out projects in the areas of information technology and communication, which will result in a net benefit for the University of Almeria. Given that the Ciudad Digital project is fully aligned with the National Convergence Program under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Industry, this will allow Almeria to benefit from new technology injections which will enhance the development of the Information Society.
