Telvent will install an Adaptive Urban Traffic Control System in the city of Erdos valued at more than four million Euro

December 9, 2004

  • Telvent continues its leadership role in China, after implementing more than 20 contracts in the traffic control sector since beginning operations in that country in 1990

Madrid, December 9, 2004 – Telvent, the Global RealTime IT Company, has been awarded a contract with the Erdos Traffic Police for the supply and installation of an Adaptive Urban Traffic Control System (ITACA), in the city of Erdos, China. The project amounts to more than four million Euro and is financed with FAD funds.

The system that will be implemented by Telvent will allow for the realtime control of the intersections through synchronizing each traffic light, based on current traffic conditions, resulting in optimized vehicle flow. To achieve this objective, the latest generation regulating devices will be installed at each intersection, which will allow for the gathering of traffic flow information, and will also control the sequencing of traffic lights at each intersection. The traffic flow data that is collected will be sent to the Control Center, where it will be processed and subsequently dispatched to the regulators, for activating and deactivating the red and green lights of the traffic signals in each intersection.

The regulators and field equipment will be connected together in a network that allows communication between devices, and between the devices and the Control Center by means of optical fiber cable. The Control Center will feature a server that will process the field data through complex regulation algorithms that will determine the appropriate sequencing of the green and red lights for every traffic light in the city, enabling optimized traffic flow. The Control Center will also include several operator consoles, from which traffic engineers will manage city traffic by monitoring the conditions, determining the applicable control actions and then implementing the most appropriate control strategies for each intersection. Since the system will be used by Chinese Engineers, both in administration as well as day-to-day operations, Telvent has developed an interface totally in Chinese, thereby facilitating the most efficient operation of the system.

In addition to the “ITACA” urban traffic control system, which has already been installed successfully in other cities such as Wuhan, Nanjing, Changchun, Zhenzhou and Fushun, Telvent will supply other systems such as the “RedEye” red traffic light infraction detection system that automatically records the license plate number of offending motorists. These systems will be part of an overall management system incorporating a geographical information system (GIS) application that will also support the CCTV's system that is utilized by police vehicles.

According to Manuel Sanchez Ortega, president of Telvent, "The implementation of this system, developed by Telvent utilizing its R&D program, will provide a great technological advance in the police services for urban traffic control, and will also increase the efficiency of the police administration in Erdos."

Erdos is the third most important city in the Autonomous Region of Inner Mongolia in China and has a population of two million inhabitants. This region is famous for its production of cashmere, coal and natural gas. Erdos, as a new industrial center, is undergoing a more accelerated pace of development than other cities of the same region, and, as a result, is having to face an annual traffic growth of 25 percent.

With this contract, Telvent consolidates its leadership position in the traffic sector in China, in which it is been operating since 1990, and where it has implemented more than 20 significant projects. These projects are related mainly to systems for control of urban and interurban traffic, toll, payment and railway.
