Befesa awarded contracts for Irrigation Modernization works and waterworks Sludge Solar Drying process

July 29, 2004

Madrid, 28th July 2004.- Befesa Medio Ambiente, Abengoa's leading Environmental Services business unit, has been awarded, through its subsidiary Construcción y Tecnología Ambiental, the 18 million euro contract to execute the Irrigation Modernization works for the Guiamets reservoir Irrigation Subscribers' Community which are in the province of Tarragona.

The objective of the project that covers an area of 1,978 hectares is to change the current gravity irrigation system that operates by turns, to a pressure irrigation system operating on demand. This project is part of the irrigation activities included in the National Irrigation Plan and the agreements signed between the Els Guiamets Irrigation Subscribers' Community and the Ministry of Agriculture, through the state-owned company Infraestructuras Agrarias (SEIASA) del Nordeste.

The works consist of the reforming of the Els Guiamets reservoir intake, the main piping system and the 7 irrigation networks the area is divided into which total more than 92 kilometers of high density polyethylene piping with diameters from 1,200 to 75 millimeters and operating pressures up to 25 kg/cm2, and the grouped and individual plot offtakes. Finally, three pumping stations will be built to pressurize the network and the irrigation systems and relift stations will be automated, with a radio communications system.

According to Javier Molina, Befesa's chairman, "these works to optimize water use and management guarantee considerable hydric resource savings, which is essential for a competitive agricultural policy. This contract consolidates Befesa's leadership on the home market in irrigation activities and is a significant part of the National Plan".

Solar Drying Plant

Furthermore, Befesa has been awarded the 1,15 million euro contract for the 3rd phase of the Solar Drying Plant Emasesa is going to construct at its treatment process sludge composting facilities at Copero Sewage Treatment Works, in Dos Hermanas, Seville. The sludge from all of Emasesa's treatment plants is treated at these facilities.

The sludge drying process, currently done by means of spreading in outdoor beds, will be changed to controlled process in a closed in area with direct solar energy assistance, once the beds have been covered over with transparent material. "This activity- says Molina- will greatly improve the environmental conditions of the facilities and its surrounding areas".

The third phase of the project comprises the air impulsion systems and deodorization by means of deep bed vegetable compost bio-filters and it will ensure that emissions of the air flow that acts as a sludge drying agent, for 76,000 cubic meters an hour, contain a concentration level below that allowed for substances that might generate unpleasant odors, such as sulfhydric anhydrate, sulfides, ammonia compounds or mercaptanes.

Befesa, Abengoa's listed Environmental Services subsidiary, closed 2003 with share capital in excess of 355 million euro. Sales were 356.5 million euro and profit was 8.4 million euro. Furthermore, it managed a total of 1,230,000 tons of industrial wastes in 2003.

Abengoa, a listed industrial and technology company with share capital in excess of 522 million euro (31.12.2003), provides solutions for Sustainable Development, the Information and Knowledge Society and the Creation of Infrastructures. It currently operates in four large activity sectors: Bioenergy, where it is the world's second largest bioethanol producer; Environmental Services, where it is European leader in certain segments of the industrial wastes market; Information Technologies, where it is one of the main international role players, with operations in Europe, America and Asia; and Industrial Engineering and Construction, where it is leader in Spain and Latin America.
