Abengoa constructs Europe's most important solar plant in Seville

June 28, 2004

Seville, June 28, 2004.- Solúcar Energía and Abener Energía, subsidiaries of Abengoa and part of Abeinsa, the lead firm in Abengoa's Engineering and Industrial Construction Business Group, celebrated today the act of placing the first brick of the solar thermoelectric plant "Sanlúcar Solar" of eleven megawatts, in Casaquemada, a municipality of Sanlúcar's Sevillian.

The act has been presided by Francisco Vallejo Serrano, Counsellor of Innovation, Science and Business of the Autonomous Region of Andalusia, Juan Escámez Luque, mayor of Sanlúcar Mayor and the President of the Union of Promotion and Development of the Aljarafe and Javier Benjumea Llorente, President of Abengoa.

This solar plant, Europe's largest and the world's first, according to its characteristics and commercial character, will produce energy sufficient to supply the consumption of 10,000 families. The energy will be generated from the steam produced in a solar recipient placed on a tower of more than one hundred meters in height, that will in turn affect the solar radiation reflected by a field of heliostats that cover a surface equivalent to one hundred soccer fields.

According to Alfonso Gonzalez, President of Abeinsa, "with this project, the result of Abengoa's efforts in Research and Development in the field of solar power, we continue with the progress of our subsidiaries of engineering and construction and the extension of our activity into new markets".

For Juan Escámez, mayor of Sanlúcar Mayor, "this project is being developed according to the parameters of innovation and alternative energy sources, while respecting the environment as reflected by the technology firms that will, in a short period of time, locate within the area of Ribera del Guadiamar, the point of reference for both Andalusian and European modernity and sustainable development."

The Counsellor of Innovation, Science and Business for the Andalusian Council, Francisco Vallejo, declared that "this initiative provide a very important step towards the objective that we have set for ourselves for Andalusia to lead the research and development of renewable energy sources". In this sense he congratulated Abengoa on its excellent work and encouraged the company to continue its effort in the modernization of Andalusia.

The project relies on subsidies from the Andalusian Council of the 5th Marco Program of the European Union and on funds from Profit of the Ministry of Education and Science. Sabadell Bank will provide the long-term funding of the project.

Abener Energía will construct the works according to the engineering plans developed by Solúcar Energía and will rely on the collaboration of Inabensa, Ciemat, DLR and Fichtner, among others.
