Telvent will supply a back-up control system for Petrobrás, in Brazil

March 29, 2004

Madrid, March 29, 2004 - Telvent, the Global Real-Time IT company, and a subsidiary of Abengoa, has been awarded the contract to supply the Brazilian company Petrobrás Transport (Transpetro) with a back-up control system to manage liquids and gas. Telvent will provide the engineering and will commission the two control centers that will serve as external back-up for the Main Control Center, in Rio de Janeiro. The new data acquisition, monitoring and SCADA control systems, and liquid and gas administration systems will take safety and security aspects into account, and will enable monitoring and control without the need for operation of the Brazilian national oil and gas pipeline networks having to be interrupted.

According to Manuel Sánchez, Telvent's Chief Executive Officer, "this project represents the most recent collaboration between Petrobrás and Telvent, in a relationship that commenced more than twelve years ago. We have helped Petrobrás and Transpetro, through a service association and field technology, to incorporate physical and environmental safety and security elements, state-of-the-art technology in automation and information management, and operational efficiency in their oil and gas pipeline operation systems".

In addition, Sanchez Ortega says, "Telvent's liquid and gas administration applications are a key to enabling Transpetro to share its data, in real-time, with other areas of its organization, such as management, programming and accounting. This exchange of information provides back-up for business operations and decision making, especially in the ever-broadening scope of a non-regulated market".

Telvent also played a key role in achieving the consolidation of Petrobrás's ten regional control centers, traditionally spread throughout the country, in one Main National Control Center. This center is equipped with a data acquisition, monitoring and SCADA control system, an oil pipeline management system and another for gas pipeline management.

From the very beginning of the relationship between Telvent and Petrobrás, Telvent has provided co-engineering, systems configuration and software development services, as well as field and remote maintenance services. Telvent is currently working with Petrobrás on the planning of the future requirement of the Brazilian oil and gas transportation system.

Petróleo Brasileiro S/A (Petrobrás), with head offices in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), is one of the world's largest oil companies. The State holds a 51% shareholding in this company which has sales in excess of 17,500 million euro per annum. It is the countries leading corporate company.
