Abengoa and innovation in concentrated solar power

Miguel Méndez Trigo, Director of Solar Thermal Technology and Energy Storage at Abengoa, explains the advantages of concentrated solar power against other renewable alternatives.

Agadir desalination plant

Abengoa is constructing this 275,000 m3/d desalination plant in Morocco which will be the largest plant designed for the combined use of drinking water and irrigation. Recognized by the International Desalination Association with the “Best Public-Private Partnership” award, the project includes the construction of the corresponding irrigation network that will cover a total of 15,000 ha.

Rabigh 3 desalination plant. Commissioning phase in progress

The commissioning of the 600,000 m3/d Rabigh desalination plant is progressing correctly. It is being built by a consortium consisting of Abengoa, SEPCOIII (Power China) and SIDEM (Veolia) for ACWA Power. This will be the largest reverse osmosis desalination plant in Saudi Arabia completed to date.

Abengoa Agua completes the construction of the Salalah desalination plant in Oman

Abengoa Agua has completed the construction of the reverse osmosis desalination plant that it was developing in the city of Salalah, in the Dhofar region, for a consortium led by ACWA Power and also composed of Veolia and Dhofar International for Investment and Development Co SAOG. The Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has acted as offtaker. The desalination plant, which has a capacity of 113,500 m3/d, began to produce water in December 2020 and, once the operational tests were completed, it began its commercial operation in March 2021.

Construction of the largest reverse osmosis desalination plant in Saudi Arabia to date, Rabigh 3 IWP

Abengoa has exceeded 85 % progress in the construction of Rabigh 3 IWP, the largest reverse osmosis desalination plant in Saudi Arabia (600,000 m3/d) to date, based in Rabigh. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the project was awarded to a consortium of Abengoa, SEPCOIII (Power China) and SIDEM (Veolia) in 2018.

ACWA Power, a leading developer, investor and operator of power generation and desalinated water plants worldwide, was selected as the owner and operator of Rabigh 3 IWP following the submission of the lowest water tariff at 0.53USD/m3. Upon completion, the desalinated water will be supplied to the state-owned Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC).

Humos Negros Project in Chile

Abengoa has been in charge of carrying a great project in Chuquicamata Division of the Chile's national copper company (CODELCO). On one side, the company has made the electromechanical assembly of a gas treatment system and, on the other side, the replacement of the number 5 dryer by another with new technology. These works are made with the objective of reducing the atmospheric emissions of particulate matter, sulphur dioxide and arsenic, product of the casting processes of Chuquicamata, to satisfy and comply the requirements of the Emission Law for copper and arsenic castings of the Chile's Ministry of Environment.

Abengoa works in the 220 kV substation in Rio Malleco (Chile)

Abengoa has been in charge of the engineering, supplying, construction and comissioning of a 220 kV substation in Malleco River, Chile. Works, developed in the context of the Transmission System Extension Plan in the country, included the sectioning of the 2x220 kV Mulchen-Cautin line and all the tests and commissioning of the installations. This project began in 2018 and ended in 2020.

Cerro Dominador: receiver raising over 252m high

We show you the raising of the receiver of Cerro Dominador project, a completely innovative manoeuvre in the construction of this type of plants. The solar thermal tower plant, being built in consortium with Acciona and property of EIG Global Energy Partners, will be the first one of its kind in Latin America.

Decarbonization Solutions

Abengoa is an expert in the hybridization of power plants to provide dispatchable, clean energy solutions, and its capabilities to supply affordable and reliable decarbonization solutions for mines, industrial facilities and isolated grids are globally recognized, with more than 12 GW of power plants – both renewable and conventional – successfully installed.

Mecca-Medina Railway line: The "bird" of the desert

Abengoa is part of the Spanish consortium Al Shoula, which was part in the construction of the high-speed line that connects the cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia. The railway line has been designed so that trains can travel at speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour.

Antel Arena

Abengoa is developing the engineering and construction of the new Antel Arena in Montevideo, a new multifunctional space that will host sports events and shows of all kinds. In the video, watch how eight large beams -28 meters long and 70 tons in weight- are assembled.

APS India

Abeinsa Power Structures (APS) offers an integrated service in the design, testing and manufacture of transmission and distribution structures, generation (solar and conventional), telecommunications and wind projects. The plant, located near Vadodara, in Gujarat State, began to operate in 2013 and has ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification.

Khi Solar One

Khi Solar One is a STE tower plant developed by Abengoa with a capacity of 50 MW. It started its commercial operation at the beginning of 2016, becoming the first tower plan commercially operating in South Africa. It prevents approximately 183,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
