Social ActionExternal Social Action
One of Abengoa’s commitments to society is that of providing special aid to communities in which we operate, in accordance with the economic, social and cultural diversity of each country. It is a commitment to grow alongside the different communities as part of the environment in which Abengoa develops its relations, creating new ties for achieving an ideal relationship between the long-term profitability of society and that of the company. This corporate strategy involves a commitment to provision of economic resources devoted to specific actions to aid the endogenous development of the population in each case.
Grants and Educational Aid for the Integration of Disabled Persons in Latin America
As part of the promotion throughout Latin America of Focus-Abengoa’s social purpose, we emphasize the intense work undertaken to support disabled people in marginalized areas with high poverty rates in Argentina and Peru. One the one hand, we are working on the construction and maintenance of schools with a supply of drinking water, electricity, kitchens, dining rooms and multi-purpose gymnasium rooms. On the other hand, in the area of food and diet, health assistance and, particularly, school and physical education, to work towards the social reintegration of women and young people.
In Argentina, through Teyma-Abengoa, we collaborate with the Congregación de las Hermanas de la Cruz at two centers for action situated in the province of Santiago del Estero, in Quimilí and Monte Quemado. We should point out the launch of the project “Bodily care: everyone’s right” based on the importance of physical education for disabled people.
Likewise, in Peru, through Abengoa Peru, we collaborate with the Hermanas Josefinas de la Caridad Institute. Said institution has four centers, three of which are for the elderly and the other a day care center, located in Lima, Chiclayo and Cerro de Pasco. Abengoa’s activity is focused on improving the living conditions of members of the congregation.
The San Rafael Senior Citizens Home
In today’s society provision of accommodation and care for elderly people is one of the main problems. Aware of this, in 1989 Abengoa drove forward the creation of a home with the aim of providing a response to the lack of specialized centers for the elderly. The strong demand from this segment the society, which receives little attention and has and scarce economic resources, led to the building of the San Rafael Senior Citizens Center, inaugurated in November of 1991. The building, located in the municipality of Dos Hermanas (Seville), is currently home to around sixty people. Involved in the initiative right from the outset, every year Abengoa renews its commitment by contributing to the maintenance, improvement and modernization of the center’s facilities, improving the quality of life of residents and their families.
The La Milagrosa Foundation
The aid work carried out by Abengoa through its Foundation’s social purpose increased this year with the signing of a partnership agreement between Focus-Abengoa and the La Milagrosa Foundation. The agreement’s objectives are undertaking aid activities in San Roque (Cádiz) for the elderly, vocational training for youth and the long-term unemployed, and social cooperation with disadvantaged local groups. It is an initiative started a few years ago by a group of individuals and Abengoa, who, in view of the area’s development and concerned by the significant increase in the number of elderly people in adjoining villages, felt the need to develop a response to the problem, and began building a senior citizens’ home in this town in the province of Cádiz. It is currently in its final phase and set for inauguration in 2007.
The San Rafael and La Milagrosa homes for the elderly are attended to by the congregation of the Hermanas Josefinas de la Caridad, a religious institution also partnering Abengoa in Peru.
