Abengoa has been awarded with a 6 millions dollars contract in Costa Rica

Madrid, 21st August, 2003.- Abengoa, through its affiliate company Inabensa, S.A, jointly with Alcotransa, have been awarded the Bid issued by Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) (Electrical Institution for Electricity of Costa Rica), for the construction of the Tabarca, Poas and Cariblanco substations.

This new project, jointly with the awarded last December also by ICE, for the construction of Cahuita, Palmar and Cobano transmission substations, allows to consolidate the Inabensa's presence in the Costa Rica electrical sector since the 70 millions dollars of business amount has been surpassed, included in the Plan de Desarrollo Electrico III (3rd Electrical Development Plan) of this Central American country. The target of this plan is the extension of the National Electrical Network, at the Central zone of the country as well as the Atlantic one and its electrical interconnection with Panama.

Alfonso Gonzalez Dominguez, President of Inabensa, declares: " this contract is the second one awarded by the national electricity and communication company of Costa Rica in less than one year and it will allow us to definitively consolidate our presence in this area. Central America is one of the main strategic targets for expanding our activities abroad in the next five years".

Inabensa, which belongs to the Industrial Engineering and Construction business group of Abengoa, adds this contract also to the one currently being under execution for Compañia Nacional de Fuerza y Luz (CNFL) for burying and extension of the Electricity Distribution Systems in San Jose, capital of the country. This business group of Abengoa obtained a 2002 sales exceeding of 646 millions euros, being 47% obtained abroad.

The execution of this contract, financed by the Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) (Inter American Bank for Development), include the civil works and assembly of the 230/34,5 Kv transmission substation, the 138/34,5 substation of Poas and the 230/34,5 Kv Substation of Cariblanco as well as the testing, commissioning and starting up. The execution period will be 425 natural days.

Abengoa is an industrial, technology company listed on the Stock Exchange, with a capitalization of more than 500 million euros (31/12/2002). It provides solutions for Sustainable Development, the Information and Knowledge Society and the Creation of Infrastructures. It currently operates in four large fields of activity: Bio-energy, where it is the world's second bio-ethanol producer; Environmental Services, where it is the leader in Europe in some of the industrial waste market segments; Information Technologies, where it is one of the key players at international level, with operations in Europe, Latin America and Asia; and Industrial Engineering and Construction, where it is leader in Spain and Latin America. Sales in 2002 exceeded 1,500 million euros and net profit was 43.5 million euros.
