Abengoa to modernize Bolivia's meteorological infrastructure systems

Madrid, August 8, 2003 - Telvent, Abengoa's Information Technology subsidiary, announced today it has signed a contract with the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Bolivia, for modernizing that country's meteorological operations. This contract, which is being implemented through the European's Development Support Fund (FAD) , will enable improved meteorological predictions and information distribution, which will provide a direct benefit to the citizenry, government and businesses in Bolivia. The total amount of the contract is over 4.5 million euros.

Telvent will use technology developed by its environmental industry group, to implement a sophisticated system of hydro meteorological stations, which will collect data and then use satellite communications to send the acquired information to Bolivia's National Centre of Processing. This data will be compiled and then integrated with the images and other information provided by the system of meteorological satellites monitoring this area of the world. The analysis of the aggregated data will then be used to produce, on a predetermined schedule, a comprehensive set of accurate, timely and readily accessible series of meteorological forecasts for the entire country.

According to Manuel Sanchez Ortega, Telvent's CEO, "Bolivia is a country which has a unique and challenging set of meteorological and environmental conditions. This upgrade to their existing infrastructure will provide improved forecasting of meteorological conditions, which will benefit the entire country."

Telvent is also actively involved in other significant technology infrastructure projects in Bolivia, including the development of the control system for the electricity distribution network in Santa Cruz de la Sierra y Cochabamba, as well as the automation and control of the Yacuiba-Rio Grande gas pipeline.

With this contract, Ortega added, "Telvent, which has implemented similar meteorological projects in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, consolidates its leadership position as a preferred global supplier of meteorology solutions. With the Boliva project, in addition to supplying a fully integrated infrastructure that enables data acquisition and manipulation of hydrometereology variables, the new system will provide advanced forecasting tools, and will distribute information on a region-by-region basis, through eight Local Processing Centers located in the regional capitals of the country"
